When fashion often comes at the cost of the planet and its people, Lucy & Yak stands as a joyful rebellion. Their brand that proves style, sustainability and compassion can coexist in style. Founded in 2017 by Lucy Greenwood and Chris Renwick, this UK-based company has blossomed from humble beginnings into a beloved label known for its vibrant aesthetic and impressive commitment to ethical practices.
The Yak we all needed
The story of Lucy & Yak began on a beach in New Zealand, where Lucy and Chris, driven by creativity and a desire for meaningful work, started crafting tobacco pouches from reclaimed fabrics. Upon returning to the UK, they sold vintage clothing from a van affectionately named “Yak.” Recognising a gap in the market for comfortable, ethically made dungarees, they launched their first collection on Depop, which quickly sold out, signalling the start of something special.

Production with care
Lucy and Yak’s celebrated team at their primary production partner, a family-run factory in Rajasthan India, builds their incredible products. The factory cares for its tailors, pays them four times the state minimum wage, and provides clean, air-conditioned facilities powered by solar energy. Each garment carries a unique number so customers can learn about the individual who made it. This creates a personal connection between maker and wearer.
To keep things sustainable here in the UK, Lucy & Yak has introduced a “Made in the UK” collection, sewn in Barnsley, Yorkshire. Reducing carbon footprint through shipping emissions, while supporting local manufacturing and reviving traditional sewing skills.

Sustainability woven into every thread
As well as ensuring their products are made sustainably and ethically at Lucy and Yak, their efforts go even further. They use GOTS-certified organic cotton, Lenzing Ecovero, flax linen, deadstock fabrics and even materials made from recycled plastic bottles. Their packaging is entirely either biodegradable, reusable, or recycled and they continually seek ways to minimise their carbon footprint.
At Lucy and Yak, they understand the importance of insuring sustainability throughout the entire lifecycle of a product and beyond. In order to adapt to this process, in 2023 they launched the Re:Yak initiative. Which aimed to encourage customers to return worn items in exchange for store vouchers. Returned garments are then resold, recycled, or up-cycled, ensuring they stay out of landfills and continue to bring joy to new owners.

Community and inclusivity at the forefront
Lucy & Yak is a community built on values of inclusivity and empowerment. Their designs are gender-neutral and cater to a wide range of body types, celebrating diversity in all its forms. They actively engage with their community through workshops, up-cycling events and collaborations with local artists. This fosters a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
The brand also supports the Fior Di Loto Foundation.. This works to improve the education and living conditions of girls in villages around Pushkar, India. This partnership reflects Lucy & Yak’s holistic approach to ethical business, extending their impact beyond fashion to social development.
While achieving remarkable strides in ethical fashion, they always remain humble and transparent about their journey. Their openness about their challenges and dedication to learning, resonate with customers who seek not just products, but brands that align with their values and aspirations for a better world.
“Yes, we’ve got some sustainable fabrics, but anyone who is producing
anything new isn’t fully sustainable.”
– Co-founder Lucy Greenwood
Fashion can be a force for good and Lucy & Yak show how this message can be reflected in every aspect of the process. From foundation to production to recycling and between the community they prosper. Infused with joy, compassion and responsibility, their vibrant designs, ethical practices and social engagement offer a refreshing alternative to the fast fashion industry.
