What is Syzygy?
Founded in 2010 by John Macdonald-Brown with the goal of bridging the gap between commercial real estate and green technology, the name Syzygy comes from a rare alignment of celestial bodies. By contrast to the energy industry’s frequent misaligned with people and planet, Syzygy brings technology, strategy and responsibility into meaningful orbit.
Based in the UK and working across Europe, the company has become a trusted partner for property owners looking to embed low-carbon technologies directly into their assets. Though, what truly sets Syzygy apart is their moral compass. As a Certified B Corporation, they’ve built their identity not around growth alone, but around climate action, social good and transparent impact.

A practical mission for a complex challenge
Using solar PV and battery storage to EV charge points and heat networks, the company provides end-to-end support for connecting real estate with green energy. Maximising their strategic planning to hands-on project delivery and ongoing asset management. Their impact is clear with over 1,500 projects completed, more than 500 million kWh of clean energy generated and over 120,000 tonnes of carbon emissions saved. This portfolio spans the ordinary and the ambitious, including office rooftops and even major infrastructure like Southend Airport’s solar system.
The Syzygy NetZero Toolkit® exemplifies their integrity and quality of service as a brand. Providing a digital platform which translates decarbonisation strategies into real-world, site-specific actions for occupiers and landlords alike.

Generating connection
Responsibility for Syzygy acts as a filter for every decision. The company’s B Corp certification represents a framework they live by. Their impact score of 80.8 reflects leadership in governance, environmental accountability and worker wellbeing.
Their work extends beyond internal metrics, as their offices running on 100% renewable electricity. Also their supply chains are actively monitored for sustainability and fairness. They also offset their emissions by supporting regenerative farming and reforestation. Even engaging local communities through education, volunteering and on-the-ground partnerships.
By being transparent in how they operate and who they partner with, Syzygy builds credibility in an industry that has historically struggled with trust.

Who’s got their wires crossed?
While Syzygy is forging a clear path, the broader energy sector remains in flux. Fossil fuel firms continue to dominate, even as their social license erodes. Thankfully regulations are tightening, such as the UK’s Energy Act 2023. However the pace of change remains too slow for the urgency of the climate crisis. Energy responsibility cannot be met with compliance. It must reckon with practical solutions and accountability of who gets clean energy, who bears the burden of pollution and who gets left behind in the transition. This is where smaller players like Syzygy hold real influence building the foundations of this essential movement. They demonstrate to the industry, how values-led business can outperform old models. Their example pressures bigger players to do better.
No single player within this industry can claim to have a monopoly on best practice. With the continued evolution of new sustainable techniques, reflecting this global moment of learning which is allowing the industry to grow. Syzygy acknowledges this and the ongoing battle between speed and quality or growth and caution. But they also show what it looks like to discover the solutions to these conundrums alongside the transformation of the industry.
Syzygy takes responsibility for daily practice, tracking emissions, improving reporting and choosing better materials. Also working with partners who share their values so the industry can grow as a whole.
