Empowering independence

The Little Market launched as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a clear mission, to elevate artisan-made goods sourced from underserved communities worldwide, while raising awareness for fair trade and human rights. Rather than selling directly, the organisation acts as a connector, linking artisan and producer groups with larger retailers and buyers who can help amplify their work and impact.

By Women, for Cultural Preservation

Spearheaded by the creative innovation of Lauren Conrad, alongside Hannah Skvarla whose background includes extensive nonprofit and human rights work. The brand was built to empower women across the globe. Since its inception in 2013, The Little Market has centered artisans’ stories, fair pay, prompt compensation and dignified working environments in its ethos.

The Little Market community

Over nearly a decade, The Little Market curated a catalog filled with expertly handcrafted pieces, ranging from etched glassware and rattan décor, to wooden dinnerware. Each richly infused with cultural significance. While the site no longer facilitates direct sales, their catalog archive remains a treasure trove of creative legacy and they now direct buyers to their artisan partners. A thoughtful inclusion in every purchase was a card introducing the maker and the origin story of the piece, creating a meaningful bond between shopper and artisan.

One of the most compelling features of The Little Market was its “Meet the Makers” directory. It listed artisan groups across continents, from Bangladesh and Guatemala to Kenya and the United States. With the aim of highlighting remarkable organisations like Bright Endeavours, Maya Traditions, Womencraft and Prosperity Candle. This directory reinforced the nonprofit’s commitment to authentic visibility and direct connections between artisans and their supporters.

Ethical Mission in Every Facet

The Little Market’s operations were guided by core principles of fair trade, human dignity, cultural celebration and environmental consciousness. Payment to artisans was prompt and fair, marginalised communities were prioritised and cultural techniques were preserved.

Every decision reflected a dedication not to profits alone, but to empowerment, justice and sustainability

Though The Little Market eventually pivoted away from direct retail. They leave behind a powerful mission that blends nonprofit mission with marketplace sensibility. The Little Market are centring artisans and amplifying cultural craftsmanship. As well as enabling meaningful buyer connections and demonstrating how commerce can be woven with justice and creative preservation.
